Frequently Asked Questions
Is Yahoo Finance data legal to use?
Yahoo Finance is an unofficial data source (no official API). Yahoo's Terms of Service prohibit accessing or collecting data from its services "using any automated means … including but not limited to robots, spiders, scrapers … for any purpose without our express, prior permission." Libraries like yfinance are not affiliated with Yahoo. Always check the provider's current terms. This isn't legal advice.
Which free stock APIs need no API key?
According to our catalog, the following sources have auth: "none":
- Yahoo Finance
- World Bank Open Data
- SEC EDGAR APIs
- Kenneth French Data Library
- U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Public Data API (v1)
Check the provider's terms; this isn't legal advice.
Can I use free-tier data commercially?
Not always. Many free tiers restrict commercial use:
- Tiingo free tier: internal/personal use only
- Twelve Data free Basic: testing, evaluation and development only. No display to users, external sharing, production use, or commercial use.
- Finnhub free plan: personal use
- FinBERT: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (non-commercial)
Always check each provider's license and terms. This isn't legal advice.
Is FRED data public domain?
It depends on the series. FRED's Legal Terms say a series has one of three copyright statuses: "Copyrighted: Pre-approval required", "Copyrighted: Citation required" or "Public Domain: Citation requested". FRED's FAQ says: "Before using data with a copyright notice for anything other than your own personal use, you must contact the data owner to obtain permission." The same Legal Terms prohibit using the FRED® API "in connection with storing, caching, or archiving any portion of the FRED® Services or FRED® Content" and "in connection with the development or training of any software program or system or machine learning, including, but not limited to, large language models" (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/legal/, read Oct 24, 2026). FRED API users must display: "This product uses the FRED® API but is not endorsed or certified by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis." This isn't legal advice.
What does "verified" mean on Signal Lab?
"Verified" means we checked the entry against the provider's own pages for: free access, authentication requirements, rate limits, license terms, and links. The verification date is shown only when it passed. Entries showing "Needs review" haven't been verified yet. Verified status doesn't constitute legal advice.
Can I save Tiingo data on the free plan?
No. Tiingo's terms (updated Oct 6, 2026) say Starter and trial users "may not write, save, archive, back up, or otherwise retain Tiingo Data in any persistent or durable storage". You can only process it in memory and must delete it once the calculation is done. If your backtest needs stored history, use a source that allows it, or a paid Tiingo plan. - /catalog.csv — CSV format
- /llms.txt — compact text
- /llms-full.txt — detailed text
