Wikimedia Pageviews
Wikimedia Pageviews
Free, official page-view counts for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects from the Wikimedia Analytics API: daily or monthly views for a single article, plus project-wide totals. No API key; a descriptive User-Agent header with contact details is required.
The Wikimedia Analytics API serves page-view counts for Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Its docs are at https://doc.wikimedia.org/generated-data-platform/aqs/analytics-api/ and the page-view endpoints sit under /metrics/pageviews/ on wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1. The data is CC0 1.0, no API key is needed, and every request must send a descriptive User-Agent header with contact details (clients without one may be blocked without notice).
Per-article views are available daily or monthly only, starting July 1, 2015, and can be split by access method (desktop, mobile-web, mobile-app) and agent type (user, spider, automated). Project-wide totals are also served hourly, and hourly page-view files for all pages are on dumps.wikimedia.org, back to May 2015. The data runs about a day behind: on Oct 26, 2026 the latest per-article day was Oct 25.
Page views are an attention proxy, not a trading signal. They count requests for a page and do not directly measure price, volume or direction. Wikimedia reports self-identified bots as spider traffic and other detected automated traffic as automated, and it does not count redirects as views of the actual page, so use a page's current title.
Rate limits: Wikimedia does not state a numeric rate limit for the Analytics API. Its general API rate-limit page lists 200 requests per minute for clients with a compliant User-Agent and 10 per minute for unidentified clients, but those numbers are not stated for the Analytics API: the page names the Action API and REST APIs, does not mention the Analytics API, and says the limits are new in 2026 and subject to experimentation and change. The Analytics API access policy asks you to wait for each request to finish before sending another. The general page also asks clients to keep concurrent requests to 3 or fewer, but that is likewise not stated for the Analytics API.
Coverage
Page views for Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia has over 300 language editions, plus Wiktionary, Commons and others). Per-article views: daily or monthly only, from Jul 1, 2015 (earlier days return no data), by access method (desktop, mobile-web, mobile-app) and agent type (user, spider, automated). Project-wide totals are also served hourly, and hourly page-view files for all pages are on dumps.wikimedia.org from May 2015. About a day behind: on Oct 26, 2026 the latest per-article day was Oct 25.
Good for
- Daily attention features for a company, index or topic article, lined up with free daily prices or FX rates
- Project-wide hourly totals to see how traffic moves through the day
- Bulk hourly page-view history for all pages from the dump files (back to May 2015)
Verdict
Page views are an attention proxy, not a trading signal: they count requests for a page and do not directly measure price, volume or direction. Wikimedia reports spider and automated traffic as separate agent types, so pick the agent type on purpose, and redirects are not counted as views of the actual page, so use a page's current title.
Endpoints
| Endpoint | Returns |
|---|---|
/per-article/{project}/{access}/{agent}/{article}/{granularity}/{start}/{end} | Views for one article; granularity is daily or monthly (hourly returns HTTP 400); data from 2015-07-01 |
/aggregate/{project}/{access}/{agent}/{granularity}/{start}/{end} | Project-wide totals; granularity hourly, daily or monthly |

Use in your agent
Load Wikimedia page views into pandas and Parquet. Checked against the provider's documentation on Oct 29, 2026.
Access
- No account or key.
- Send a User-Agent header with a client name and contact details; clients without one may be blocked without notice.
Request
curl -A 'my-research-bot/0.1 (your.email@example.com)' https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/metrics/pageviews/per-article/en.wikipedia/all-access/user/Bitcoin/daily/20261001/20261028Format
JSON: items, one per day or month, with project, article, granularity, timestamp (YYYYMMDDHH), access, agent and views.
Load into pandas and Parquet
Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.

print(len(df), "rows;", df.groupby("article")["views"].sum().to_dict())Run by us on 2026-10-29 (python 3.13.5 | pandas 3.1.0 | pyarrow 26.0.0 | requests 2.34.2). Result: 1,998 daily rows for three English Wikipedia articles, 2025-01-01 to 2026-10-28.
Limits
- Rate limit: Not stated for the Analytics API. The access policy asks you to wait for each request to finish before sending another.
Quirks
- Article titles use underscores for spaces and must be URL-encoded (S&P_500 becomes S%26P_500).
- Per-article data is daily or monthly only and starts on 2015-07-01.
- agent=user leaves out spiders and automated traffic; all-agents includes them.
- Bulk files for the same data are on dumps.wikimedia.org.
Terms and attribution
- The data is CC0 1.0. Using the API also means agreeing to Wikimedia's terms of use and privacy policy.
