Open-source financial data platform that unifies providers behind Python, REST, MCP, and Workspace surfaces. Licensed under Apache-2.0. On Aug 25, 2026, OpenBB Inc. committed to releasing its entire product suite under a permissive license; an Oct 1, 2026 edit to that announcement named OpenBQ, a new non-profit, as steward of OpenBB technology. The code now lives at github.com/openbq-org.
Verdict
Excellent open-source backbone for quant research and AI agents that need one API across many data providers. Provider coverage depends on which packages you install. License: Apache-2.0 (permissive); the earlier AGPL-3.0 note no longer applies to the current repo. Workspace: OpenBB says the Workspace codebase "will be stewarded by FINOS (Linux Foundation)" (Oct 1, 2026 edit), and the FINOS Labs proposal for it was marked approved on Oct 14, 2026. OpenBB's Aug 25, 2026 post says the company couldn't build a sustainable business and that hosted-product customers "will hear from us directly about timelines."
